![]() ![]() so i think “perfect match” is a tricky thing, because everyone has different perceptions (i mean look at each brand’s undertones, they’re all different). while i’ll tell people what looks best, i make sure to say, too, “you’re the one wearing it”. ![]() even when matching clients, personal bias comes into play, on both my end and the clients. i also feel like 90% of the employees at my store who work in makeup are competent in color matching. as much as we are certainly trained to help you find everything you’re looking for and be experts, we are also encouraged to try to keep things sweet and simple (so we can move on to the next person).Īs someone who works in makeup quite often, i do feel my color matching skills are strong. what it does mean, though, is that likely, as we’re helping you, we probably have 4 more people waiting for another one. that being said, it’s easy to get tired of them, and by no means does that mean that someone should take it out on you. I’m speaking for myself and myself only, but as an employee who works at a fairly high volume store color matches come a dime a dozen and it is the most common request we get from clients. Sometimes a brand just won’t have a perfect match, their undertones might skew towards warm yellow or cool pink, or they’ll have your shade but not the right undertone, so just keep on keeping on until you find it! I’ve found that Fenty, Smashbox, Pat McGrath, and believe it or not the Sephora Collection lines all have a wide variety of undertones. There will be a lot of trial and error until you get it right, but once you do, you can spot the right shade a mile away (or sometimes you’ll need to buy two shades and mix). Also please note that the lighting in sephora is horrible, get to a window or go outside and check, but also account for possible oxidation changing the color. Anyway, I think that for most people, it’s easier to match yourself with trial and error than to have a Sephora employee match you. I even had an associate that didn’t know color theory. I’m pale olive, and I’ve had people match me to peachy, yellow, super white, and pinky shades. She was super punky with bright fuschia manic-panic hair and I just did not want to ask her, but i was so wrong- she found a Make Up For Ever concealer that was a dead on match (sadly discontinued). I’ve had so many people color match me over the years at Sephora, and only one person got it right. ![]() How accurate is the machine they use to color match? I’ve never been offered that. She goes wow you used to be dark and hands me Y315 (cool tone) which was darker and gives me a swatch and then had nothing else to say. I told her I was matched with Y245 before (warm undertone). I recently got color matched with a MUFE foundation stick. Before the sale I bought a Giorgio Armani one that was too pink and a shade too dark. I never questioned it until recently shopping in store during the sale and overheard newbies being trained on “what to say” about a product as if it’s a generalized sell pitch. Tracing back to every time I have asked to get color matched, I noticed some of the employees were either in a rush and swatched something quickly or just incompetent and did a random swatch. I always noticed how pink I looked in my car after I do a full face of makeup. Can I trust any employee at Sephora to do a color match for me? I have bought numerous foundations and was convinced to this day that I was “warm” tone.

When my children were young and watched the 1997 Disney animated film “Hercules,” I always found myself drawn to the Greek mythology Muses who narrated the film. Today, the most famous depiction of the Muses in sculpture is in Greece, in Corfu the Empress Sissi of Austria had their statues made for her, in order to ornament the garden of her retreat house in Corfu, the famous Achilleion.“The Muse visits during the process of creation, not before.”-Roger Ebert All artists of the Renaissance acknowledged their importance in artistic creation, dedicating their works to the Muses. The Nine Muses have been inspiring artists since the antiquity and there countless paintings, drawings, designs, poems and statues dedicated to them. ![]() According to the myth, Homer asks from Calliope to inspire him while writing Iliad and Odyssey, and, thus, Calliope is depicted holding laurels in one hand and the two Homeric poems in the other hand. Polymnia: Muse Polymnia was the protector of the divine hymns and mimic art she invented geometry and grammar. She was depicted holding a lyre and love arrows and bows.ħ. Her name comes from the Greek word “Eros” that refers to the feeling of falling in love. Erato: Muse Erato was the protector of Love and Love Poetry – as well as wedding. She was depicted wearing laurels on her head, holding a harp and dancing.Ħ. She was called Terpsichore because she was enjoying and having fun with dancing ( “Terpo” in Greek refers to be amused). Terpsichore: Terpsichore was the protector of dance she invented dances, the harp and education. She was depicted holding a tragedy mask and usually bearing a bat.ĥ. Melpomene: Opposite from Thalia, Muse Melpomene was the protector of Tragedy she invented tragedy, rhetoric speech and Melos. She was always depicted holding a theatrical – comedy mask.Ĥ. Thalia: Muse Thalia was the protector of comedy she discovered comedy, geometry, architectural science and agriculture. She was always depicted holding a flute, while many instruments were always around her.ģ. Euterpe: Muse Euterpe discovered several musical instruments, courses and dialectic. Clio was always represented with a clarion in the right arm and a book in the left hand.Ģ. History was named Clio in the ancient years, because it refers to “kleos” the Greek word for the heroic acts. Clio: The Muse Clio discovered history and guitar. Seven muses invented the seven chords of the lyre, the seven celestial zones, the seven planets and the seven vocals of the Greek Alphabet. Muses and ArtsĪccording to the Greek Mythology, two Muses invented theory and practice in learning, three Muses invented the musical vibrations in Lyre, four Muses invented the four known dialects in the language – Attica, Ionian, Aeolian and Dorian – and five muses the five human senses. Ever since, the Muses supported and encouraged creation, enhancing imagination and inspiration of the artists. Apollo brought them to the big and beautiful Mount Elikonas, where the older Temple of Zeus used to be. They were not interested in anything of the regular human everyday life and they wanted to dedicate their lives to the Arts. When they grew up they showed their tendency to the arts, taught by God Apollo himself. Μnemosyne gave the babies to Nymph Eufime and God Apollo. The result of their encounter was the Nine Muses, who were similar to everything. The 9 Muses are dancing while Apollo is playing the lyre The Muses in the Greek MythologyĪccording to the Greek Myths, God Zeus bewildered the young woman Mnemosyne and slept with her for nine consecutive nights. In painting the Muses are usually presented as ethereal women with divine beauty, holding laurels and other items depending on their faculty. Homer asks the Muses both in the Iliad and Odyssey to help him tell the story in the most proper way, and until today the Muses are symbols of inspiration and artistic creation. The Nine Muses were: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomeni, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Ourania and Calliope.Īll the ancient writers appeal to the Muses at the beginning of their work. The word museum also comes from the Greek Muses. Hesiod reveals that they were called Muses or Mouses in Greek, as the Greek word “mosis” refers to the desire and wish. “Sing to me oh Muse”… The Nine Muses of the Greek Mythology were deities that gave artists, philosophers and individuals the necessary inspiration for creation. So when he hired musicians, they included drummer Bobby Z, who was really Robert Rivkin, a nice Jewish boy from the St. The distinguishing characteristic of his music, what probably accounted for its mass appeal, was precisely that it incorporated many styles not often associated with Black music, including new wave, heavy metal, synth-pop, psychedelia and even classical - into what came to be called “the Minneapolis sound.” Having come up through the ranks of Minneapolis’s thriving funk scene, Prince’s ultimate musical goal was always to be a mainstream pop star and not to be consigned to rhythm and blues. When he originally put together his band the Revolution - the group that accompanied him on his breakthrough album and subsequent film, “Purple Rain” - he made a conscious decision to have a multiracial outfit featuring both men and women. And, in that memoir, Prince said that, as a child, he identified with Superman, a superhero who is hardly a stranger to the Forward’s pages. Meeting with Dan Piepenbring, his eventual collaborator on the new, posthumous memoir “The Beautiful Ones,” the artist revealed that his best childhood friend was Jewish. Prince was no stranger to the Jewish part of town. Prince, it turned out, had become a Jehovah’s Witness. The two offered her pamphlets and asked if they could come inside to talk about the Bible. On Erev Yom Kippur, a Minneapolis woman answered her doorbell to find two gentlemen standing in her doorway: her hometown’s most famous son - whom she recognized instantly - along with Larry Graham, former bassist for Sly and the Family Stone - whom she didn’t recognize. A year earlier, his offshoot band, the New Power Generation, released an album called “Exodus.” Also in 1996, Prince released an album called “Chaos and Disorder,” a loose translation of two key words in the second verse of the Bible - “the earth was tohu v’vohu” - probably a good description of what it felt like to be sitting in a marketing meeting at Warner trying to figure out how to promote the star’s next album without using the name “Prince.”Ī decade after his name change, in 2003, Prince found himself at the center of a quieter but no less unusual episode. Imagine you were one of those record label honchos - how infuriating it would be for your biggest star and cash cow to refuse to allow his recordings to bear his name, or any name! Prince - or at this point, “the Artist Formerly Known as Prince” - even began writing the word “slave” on his cheek whenever he was going out in public.Ī Jewish Tribute to Prince, Holy Unifier of Spirit and S e xįor the man born Prince Rogers Nelson, this was ultimately an act of self-emancipation indeed, he titled an album “Emancipation” in 1996. ![]() ![]() In Prince’s case, replacing his name with what he called the “love symbol” - something approximating a union of the symbols for male and female, but not quite - was meant as a protest against the executives at his label, Warner Records, with whom he was struggling for creative and financial control of his career. In 1993, at the height of his fame, after selling millions of albums, collecting a closetful of Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy awards, and establishing himself as one of the all-time greats of rock ’n’ roll, Prince did an odd thing: He changed his name to an unpronounceable glyph.Ĭhanging one’s name, of course, has a long and venerable history, going back at least as far as biblical times, and often reflects inner or outer turmoil, such as when Abram and Jacob became Abraham and Israel. ![]() Key near a window or purchase receipts in trash bins. The Ranger IV Atlas-Agena rocket, which took off from Cape Canaveral on 23 April, is one of the most sophisticated space machines ever developed. However, the main aim of the mission - to take television pictures of the lunar surface - was not achieved after all internal power on board the spacecraft failed two hours after launch. It is the first time an American spacecraft has successfully reached the Moon - the Russians achieved the first ever lunar impact in 1959. The timestamp is only as accurate as the clock in the camera, and it may be completely wrong. The American Moon rocket Ranger IV has landed on the far side of the moon but has failed to send back pictures due to a technical fault. If the file has been modified from its original state, some details such as the timestamp may not fully reflect those of the original file. Ranger 9 was told to crash in the crater Alphonsus.Īlthough less scientific knowledge was gained than expected, NASA system engineers learned an immense amount about spacecraft and quality control which would later allow NASA to put a man on the Moon - SAFELY. Ranger 8 photographed the souther part of Oceanus Procellarum and Mare Nubium, and eventually was told by NASA to crash in Mare Tranquillitatis (where Apollo 11 would land four years later). But Ranger 7, 8, and 9 performed flawlessly! Ranger 7 photographed Mare Cognitum, proving that impact craters covered the Moon - even in the supposedly smooth highlands. The camera on Ranger 6 failed as it approached the Moon. Items as small as a 12 inches could be discrened on the images it received. The "block three" Rangers carried a high-resolution TV camera. NASA discovered that this gold cracked and flaked off in the harsh conditions of outer space. ![]() ![]() Ranger 5 also missed the Moon due to a trajectory error. ![]() Its seismometer also failed to function, but it did soft-land on the lunar surface. Ranger 4's TV camera and radiation detector failed during the flight to the Moon. Sadly, Ranger 3 missed the Moon due to a trajectory miscalculation on Earth months earlier. The capsule would then transmit seismic data back to Earth. Retrorockets would slow the seismometer capsule, allowing it to land softly on the lunar surface. The seismometer was designed to be ejected from the craft as it crashed into the Moon. They carried a TV camera, a radiation detector, and a seismometer. "Block two" Rangers were improved versions of the "block one" craft. (NASA would later use the designs for Ranger "block one" for the Mariner space probes of Venus.) The spacecraft could not stabilize themselves or collect solar power. Sadly, the Atlas-Agena rockets that launched Ranger 1 and Ranger 2 left these craft in orbits which were too low. The basic spacecraft technology we take for granted today - three-axis attitude stabilization (without spinning the craft), on-board thrusters, two-way communication, closed-loop tracking (in which the spacecraft measures where it is a space and moves without receiving ground signals), on-board computing, control from the ground using commands that tell the on-board computer to run complex sequences - all had to be developed for the Ranger program. Ranger 1 and 2 were part of "block one," which was designed to test the Ranger technology in Earth orbit. There were three types (or "blocks") of Ranger spacecraft. The Lunar Orbiter craft did the high-resolution mapping just before the Apollo Moon landings. They were followed up by the Surveyor program, which actually landed spacecraft on the Moon. Mapping of the Moon began with the Ranger spacecraft.
